How to Play : Basic Version

Basic Setup

Shuffle the Protect Your Cryptos™ deck and deal 5 cards to each player. Randomly choose one player to start the game. Make sure the deck is well mixed, then deal the cards one at a time until everyone has 5 cards in their hand. Players may look at their own cards, but should keep them hidden from other players. If you are playing for the first time, set aside the special Wild cards (such as Hacker, Safe, Move, and Utility cards). Once you’re comfortable with the basic gameplay, you can add these cards back in and play the Advanced version for more strategy and excitement. The Basic Rules are the best way to learn how to play Protect Your Cryptos™ before moving on to advanced strategies.

Turn over the top card of the deck and place it face up to start the discard pile.

Place the remaining deck in the center of the table so all players can reach it. Flip the top card face up and place it next to the deck to create the "Play Pile". Once this is done, you’re ready to start protecting your cryptos!

Choose Game Action

The player to the left of the dealer takes the first turn. On your turn in Protect Your Cryptos™, you may choose only one game action. Each action is explained in detail in the sections below: 1. Create a secure crypto set by forming a matching pair of cards 2. Discard one card from your hand 3. Challenge another player in an attempt to hack and steal their crypto cards
Play a matching pair of Crypto cards to form a set. You may form a set by using two identical Crypto cards from your hand, or by combining one Crypto card from your hand with the top card of the "Play Pile", as long as they match. Place the completed pair face up in front of you—this is called your Set Pile. A Bitcoin or Ethereum Wild card may be used in place of one Crypto card when forming a set. When using a Wild card, always place the Crypto card on top so it’s easy for everyone to see. As you build additional sets on future turns, alternate the direction you place each set (horizontal, then vertical) to clearly separate your crypto holdings.

After your turn, draw cards from the deck until you have 5 cards in your hand.

Keep that in mind, no matter which action you choose on your turn, always draw cards from the deck until you have 5 cards in your hand. Once your turn is complete, play passes to the next player on the left. If another player played cards during a challenge, they also draw cards from the deck to refill their hand back to 5 cards.

Discard a card to get rid of cards from your hand

If a card in your hand doesn’t fit your strategy, you may take the Discard action and place it face up on top of the "Play Pile". You may discard any card from your hand. Once discarded, the card becomes available for the next player, who may use it on their turn to help form a crypto set.

Ending of a Round and Scoring

The round ends when the Draw Pile is empty and all players have played the cards in their hands. Play continues clockwise around the table until the deck is fully drawn. Once the Draw Pile is empty, players must continue playing any remaining cards in their hand. When everyone has no cards left, the round is over. Some players may remain active in the round longer than others depending on the actions they take. Even if you play all your cards, other players can still challenge you to hack the top set from your Set Pile, so keep your crypto protected!

Add the Crypto value of the cards in your Set Pile

Each Crypto Asset and Wild card has a value printed at the top. Sort through the cards in your Set Pile and add up their total value. Record your score on the score sheet. To make counting easier, separate your cards into stacks of the same Crypto type.

Winning the "Protect Your Cryptos" Game

Play rounds until a player’s total Crypto values reach $1,000,000. The first player to reach $1,000,000 wins the game! If no one reaches that score in the first round, the player to the left of the first dealer becomes the next dealer. Shuffle the deck and deal the cards to start a new round. Most games take 4–5 rounds for a player to hit $1,000,000, but for a quicker game, you can play just 1–3 rounds and the player with the highest total wins. You can also keep track of rounds individually: the first player to have the highest total in 2 separate rounds is the winner!
